Greek Women Creators in the Alpha Bank Collection
The Alpha Bank Art Collection presents the exhibition “WOMEN: Greek Women Creators in the Alpha Bank Collection” on the 2nd floor of the Ionian Bank Museum of Banknotes in Corfu.
The exhibition showcases 46 works of art by 41 Greek women artists from a total of 145 represented in the Collection. Through these works, the fascinating journey of women creators in Greece unfolds, from the late 19th century, when they first took steps as professional artists, to the early 21st century.
The exhibition aims to highlight the contributions of women to every facet of artistic creation in Greece, despite the obstacles and discrimination they have faced over time.
At a time when the issue of female empowerment dominates public discourse, the exhibition also seeks to acknowledge the complex and often conflicting roles that women are expected to adopt today.
Exhibition Sections: To integrate the achievements of women in art within the broader context of the educational, social, and political advancements of each era, the exhibition is divided into 5 thematic sections:
Women in the Art Scene – The Early Steps (Late 19th – Early 20th Century)
The public discovers the first attempts by women to engage in art at a professional level in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Painting – From Representation to Abstraction
Works by women artists who established themselves in the art world in the second half of the 20th century and embraced the movement of abstraction are on display.
Printmaking – Traditional Techniques and Experimentation with New Media
Exclusive print works are presented, showcasing the female perspective and women’s contribution to the development of new techniques.
Sculpture
Pieces are exhibited that highlight the contributions of women to the art of sculpture.
Contemporary Art – Renewal of the Visual Space
Works reflecting the explorations and trends of contemporary women creators and how they are influenced by the new digital reality are included.
