The Archaeological Museum of Corfu has been housed since 1967 in the Garitsa area, in a two-storey modernist building dedicated to the archaeological heritage of Corfu and the wider island.
Between 2012 and 2016, the museum underwent an extensive renovation and modernization project, resulting in a renewed permanent exhibition presenting the cultural history of Corfu from prehistoric to Roman times.
The exhibition is developed across two levels:
- the ground floor presents prehistoric collections and the foundation of ancient Corfu during the Greek colonization period,
- the upper floor follows the islandβs historical evolution from the 7th century BC to the 4th century AD.
Among the museumβs most important exhibits are:
- the monumental pediment from the Archaic Temple of Artemis featuring the Gorgon Medusa,
- the Lion of Menecrates funerary monument,
- important inscriptions and sculptural works from ancient Corfu.
The museum offers visitors a comprehensive insight into daily life, religion, trade, burial customs, and the political organization of ancient Corfu.
