The Agios Mathaios Philharmonic Society “Lorentzos Mavilis” was founded in 1965 in the village of Agios Mathaios and serves as an important musical and cultural institution for the wider area, providing free music education.
The Philharmonic Society operates music theory, brass, woodwind and percussion classes. Its educational programme is supported by specialist teachers, while approximately 50 students attend its theory and instrumental courses.
The main band consists of approximately 65 musicians. The Society also maintains a junior band of around 20 young students and a light music ensemble of approximately 15 musicians. Many young people have received their musical training through the Philharmonic Society, with several continuing professionally or pursuing studies at the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University.
The Philharmonic Society actively participates in cultural, sporting, national and religious events in Agios Mathaios and throughout Corfu. It has also taken part in events and performances elsewhere in Greece and abroad.
Its operation and educational activities are supported by its members, subscribers and the local community, contributing consistently to the preservation and promotion of Corfu’s long-standing philharmonic tradition.
