Achilleion Corfu is one of the island’s most important historical and cultural landmarks. The palace was built in Gastouri and completed in 1891 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, widely known as Sisi, who dedicated it to Achilles and decorated it with works inspired by ancient Greek mythology.
In 1907, the Achilleion was acquired by German Emperor Wilhelm II, who introduced significant changes to the palace gardens and surrounding grounds.
Today, the Achilleion remains an important part of Corfu’s cultural heritage. Its palace, gardens and sculptures — including the “Dying Achilles” and “Victorious Achilles” — create a distinctive connection between European history, Greek mythology and art.
