The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) was founded in 1842, thanks to a donation by the Greek benefactor Georgios Sina, and is the oldest scientific research institution in modern Greece as well as one of the oldest observatories in the world.
The first historic building was constructed on the Hill of the Nymphs in Thissio, designed by the renowned architect Theophil Hansen. Over the years, NOA has developed into a modern research organization covering several major scientific fields:
🔭 Astronomy & Astrophysics
🌍 Seismology – through the Geodynamic Institute
🌦 Meteorology & Climatology – through the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development
🔥 Forest fire monitoring, environmental observation and satellite data analysis – through the BEYOND Center
The National Observatory of Athens also operates important scientific facilities including:
• the historic central building in Thissio
• the Penteli Observatory, home to the historic Newall telescope
• modern telescope installations across Greece
• public outreach and education visitor centers in Thissio and Penteli
Today, the National Observatory of Athens is an internationally recognized research institution participating in numerous scientific programs, satellite monitoring systems and public science outreach initiatives.
