The Velonades Cultural Association was founded in March 1999 by local residents and currently counts approximately 110 members. Its mission is to promote the cultural heritage of the area, strengthen community bonds and encourage active participation not only in cultural activities but also in social initiatives.
As part of its activities, the association has established:
• a traditional dance group
• a choir
• a blood bank
• a lending library
• a folklore museum
• a photography exhibition
Since 2010, it has been based in the Velonades Cultural Center, a historic neoclassical building of particular importance to the area.
The building is closely connected to the village’s history. The ground floor dates back to the Venetian period and was used for grape processing and tsipouro production, while the upper floor functioned as a primary school from 1930 until 1991.
During the German occupation, the building served as a gathering place, and later became an important hub of social activity for the local community.
Restoration efforts began in 1993 and were completed in 2004, when the building was granted to the Municipality of Esperies for the creation of the Cultural Center, where the association is now housed and remains active today.
