The village of Kavalouri takes its name from the nobleman Kavalourios, a large landowner in the area. A historic mansion built in 1540 still survives in the village; it originally belonged to the Halikiopoulos family and was later purchased by the Corfiot watercolor painter Angelos Giallinas, a favorite artist of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
The Kavalouri Cultural Association was founded in 1984 by residents of the village with the aim of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage, traditions and customs of the area. With the support of its members and volunteers, the association remains active through numerous cultural and sporting events, contributing to the preservation of local traditions.
The association operates through three main sections:
• Choir
• Folk Dance Group
• Theatre Group
The Kavalouri Cultural Association has travelled to many regions of Greece, presenting Corfu’s traditional music and dances, and continues to promote the cultural identity of the island through its activities.
