The Corfu Philharmonic Society, known as the “Old Philharmonic,” was founded on 12 September 1840 and is the oldest music-educational institution in Greece.

It was established with the aim of creating a complete music academy, modeled after Italian institutions of the time, offering free musical education to all, regardless of social class, age, or gender. Prior to its foundation, access to music education in Corfu was limited.

The Society provides comprehensive training both in practical performance (string and wind instruments, piano, vocal music) and in theoretical studies (music theory, composition, aesthetics). Its non-profit character and high educational standards have played a decisive role in shaping Corfu’s rich musical tradition.
