The artistic association Echoes was founded in 2013 by soprano Elli Karydi, who also serves as its artistic director. Its core began as a female vocal ensemble consisting of students and professional singers from the Ionian University and local conservatories. The association was initially known as Female Echoes, before later establishing the name Echoes.
Echoes has collaborated with organizations such as the Corfu Municipal and Regional Theatre (DIPEThE Corfu), the Ionian University, the Chamber Opera, the Municipal Philharmonic of Kalamata, the Rotary Club of Corfu, the Ionian Conservatory, the Perivoli Cultural Association Mandolin Orchestra, the San Giacomo Municipal Choir, the Kapodistrias Philharmonic, the Mantzaros Philharmonic Society, and Dancesport.
Among its productions are the children’s operas “In the Enchanted Forest” by K. Tsitsas and Brundibár by H. Krása (co-production with DIPEThE Corfu and the Chamber Opera), attended by approximately 2,000 schoolchildren in Corfu, as well as the musical “The Christmas Gold” by Ch. Hinkins.
The group has also presented musical and dance performances featuring Disney songs and the shows “Magic of the Musicals I & II”, participated in the oratorio “Enosis” by Zorze Katris, and in a tribute to the work of Periklis Papadopoulos. The musical dance performance “Sing with Me” was also presented in Kalamata. The contribution of choreographer Flora Dandolou and costume designer Penelope Mamalou was significant in the realization of these productions.
Echoes has also presented the operas “La Serva Padrona” by G. B. Pergolesi and “The Telephone” by G. C. Menotti. The association has organized singing workshops with countertenor Nikos Spanatis and musical theatre workshops with Cindi Trent, as well as the concert “Aroma of Smyrna.”
In June 2023, the first initiative to establish a plucked-string orchestra was presented under the title “Eptanisian Amalgam,” including participation in Varkarola 2023. At the beginning of 2025, the ensemble officially adopted the name Corfu Estudiantina, launching a series of concerts dedicated to the mandolin, under the musical direction of Spyros Rouvas.
