Ionian Academy & Lord Guilford: Anniversary Catalogue Released

The Ionian University has published the bilingual catalogue of the exhibition titled “…about the desired university – The Ionian Academy and Lord Guilford”, as part of the anniversary events marking 200 years since the founding of the Ionian Academy (1824).

The publication is also linked to the celebration of 40 years since the establishment of the Ionian University (1984), highlighting the historical continuity of higher education in Corfu.

🔹 The Exhibition

The exhibition was organized by the Ionian University, in collaboration with the Corfu Reading Society, and was hosted at the Municipal Art Gallery of Central Corfu from December 2024 to December 2025.

Throughout its duration, it attracted significant interest from both the academic community and the general public, shedding light on the importance of the Ionian Academy as the first university institution in the Greek-speaking world.

🔹 The Catalogue

The bilingual catalogue brings together:

  • original archival material

  • historical documents

  • scholarly studies

offering a comprehensive view of the Ionian Academy’s contribution to the development of university education in both the Greek and European context.

Particular emphasis is placed on the vision of Lord Guilford, who envisioned a university that would combine education with humanism and scientific progress — a vision that continues to shape the intellectual identity of the Ionian Islands.

🔹 Academic Coordination

The project was coordinated by Professor Ilias Yarenis, former Vice Rector and current member of the Ionian University Council, in collaboration with the Corfu Reading Society.

The publication was successfully implemented by:

  • Associate Professor Aikaterini-Konstantina Kontopanagou

  • Assistant Professor Mirka Palioura

🔹 Funding

The catalogue was made possible through funding from the Regional Development Fund of the Region of Ionian Islands, highlighting the importance of cooperation between academic institutions and local authorities in promoting culture, historical awareness, and scientific knowledge.

🔹 Rector’s Statement

As noted by the Rector of the Ionian University, Professor Andreas Floros:

“The exhibition not only achieved its anniversary goal, but through its successive extensions it allowed a large number of visitors to explore, in depth and with scientific documentation, the historical course of the Ionian Academy. The exhibition now continues to live on through its bilingual catalogue.”

The publication of the catalogue ensures that the legacy of the exhibition remains accessible, serving as a valuable reference point for the history of education and intellectual life in the Ionian Islands.
