The Astronomical Society of Corfu is one of the island’s most important scientific and cultural organizations, dedicated to astronomy, science education and public outreach.
Foundation
On 13 February 1927, the “Astronomical Society of Greece” was founded in Corfu, the only organization of its kind in the country at the time. The society had approximately 800 members from around the world and operated an observatory equipped with two telescopes, a meteorological enclosure and a spectroscope.
From the same year, the Society published the journal “Ourania”, named after the Muse of Astronomy, in Greek and French, and occasionally in German and English.
The Society’s work was officially recognized by the Greek state when it received an award from the Academy of Athens in 1932. The international recognition of its members is also reflected in astronomy itself, as a lunar crater was named after its founder Felix Lamech, while two additional craters — one on Mars and one on the Moon — bear the name of the Corfiot astronomer Ioannis Fokas.
The Society was reactivated in 1996 and today continues to develop scientific, educational and cultural activities.
Mission
The Society carries out educational and cultural work through:
-
regular public sky observations with telescopes,
-
weekly lectures on astronomy and science,
-
educational programs for students of all ages,
-
and collaborations with other institutions for scientific and cultural events.
Activities
In 2007, the Society participated in European programs and created a lending library with approximately 500 scientific and astronomy books and about 600 scientific DVDs.
It also implemented the Sci.Art (Science and Art) program for the first time in Greece, focusing on artistic astrophotography.
The Society participates in Greek and international amateur astronomy conferences, while its astronomy observation and astrophotography team collaborates with astronomical societies and educational institutions from Greece and around the world.
Members have presented research announcements to international scientific organizations, and their astrophotographs have been published and awarded in Greek and international astronomy journals and websites.
The Society also collaborates in national and international initiatives addressing light pollution and environmental protection.
⭐ All events organized by the Astronomical Society of Corfu are free and open to the public.
