Ionian University is a dynamic multi-island institution with a strong academic, research, and educational presence in Greece and internationally. It was founded in 1984 in the historic city of Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, the University consists of five Schools and twelve Departments, operating across four Ionian Islands: Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and Lefkada.
Ionian University is the proud academic successor of the historic Ionian Academy, the first modern Greek University, which operated in Corfu from 1824 to 1864. The University’s headquarters are located in Corfu, in the landmark building of the Ionian Academy, where the Rectorate is housed and where lectures, ceremonies, conferences, and academic activities take place.
A distinctive feature of the University is the originality and interdisciplinary character of its study programs, covering the fields of humanities, social sciences, natural and economic sciences, as well as arts and creative disciplines. Several departments offer unique academic subjects within Greece, combining science, culture, and artistic innovation.
