The Lyceum of Greek Women – Corfu Branch was founded in 1990 and is one of the many branches of the Lyceum of Greek Women operating in Greece and abroad. It forms part of a historic institution founded in Athens in 1911 by Kalliroi Parren, with the aim of preserving and promoting Greek music, dance, customs and folk traditions, while also strengthening the social and cultural role of women.
Since its establishment, the Corfu Branch has developed a significant programme of cultural and educational activities. It organizes seminars, performances, conferences, lectures and cultural events, while also participating in television productions, publishing printed material and conducting research and activities related to singing, dance, painting, embroidery, handicrafts and contemporary movement.
The Branch has hosted and collaborated with prominent figures of Greek traditional culture, including Chronis Aidonidis, Nektaria Karantzi and Evgenios Spatharis, as well as distinguished folk musicians. One of its notable appearances was on “To Alati tis Gis”, the television programme presented by ethnomusicologist Lambros Liavas.
Its activities include traditional dance groups for different age groups, adult and children’s choirs, a traditional choir and percussion section, a handicrafts section and a contemporary movement group. The Branch also maintains an active social programme and has developed an extensive costume collection featuring traditional dress from many regions of Greece, as well as theatrical and Baroque costumes.
The Lyceum of Greek Women – Corfu Branch has presented its cultural work throughout Greece, in Cyprus and internationally, with appearances in cities across Italy, Austria, Sweden, Egypt and Turkey. Through these activities, it promotes Greek traditions and the cultural identity of Corfu beyond the island.
Since 2012, it has presented Corfu’s urban carnival every year during the Carnival season, featuring Baroque music and period costumes. The event has gained wide recognition and has become an important part of the city’s Carnival celebrations, attracting residents, visitors and travel organizations from across Greece.
Through its wide-ranging activities, the Lyceum of Greek Women – Corfu Branch contributes to the preservation of historical memory, folklore and Greek cultural heritage, introducing younger generations to the richness, diversity and enduring value of tradition.
