The Corfu Chess Players Association, founded in 1923, is the oldest chess club in Greece, following the legacy of the distinguished Corfiot poet, chess player, and problem composer Lorentzos Mavilis.
With a long-standing tradition in competitive chess, Corfu has played a significant role in the development of the sport in Greece, producing notable players such as Grandmaster Spyros Skembris, a five-time Greek Champion. The association’s team has also reached the final of the Greek Cup twice.
Corfu has hosted some of the first major international open chess tournaments in Greece, attracting world champions such as Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov, as well as renowned grandmasters including Jan Timman and the Polgar sisters.
