The Reading Society of Corfu has recently enriched its historical collections with a remarkable donation: part of the personal archive of Corfiot Endy Papantonatos, offering valuable insight into an important period of Corfu’s political and social history, from the early 1960s through the first years of the Greek Metapolitefsi (Post-Junta period).
The archive contains hundreds of original historical documents, including letters, meeting minutes, internal correspondence, printed material, and rare photographs that vividly capture the atmosphere of the era. Among its highlights are letters from then Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou, documents from the ONEK and EDIN youth organizations in Corfu, as well as issues of the newspaper “Anendotos”, published in Corfu between 1964 and 1967.
The photographic collection is equally significant, featuring images from Georgios Papandreou’s visit to Corfu in July 1965, the EDIN Conference held at the Ethnikon Theatre in 1966, and various gatherings, public events, and activities of the island’s youth during that period.
Beyond their political context, these documents represent invaluable historical evidence of everyday life, civic engagement, and public expression in Corfu during a defining chapter of the island’s modern history. They provide an important resource for historians, researchers, and anyone interested in Corfu’s cultural and historical heritage.
The collection has now been incorporated into the Reading Society’s archives under the title “Endy Papantonatos Archive”. Its cataloguing was carried out by the Society’s archivist, Evdokia Leontiadou.
Through this generous donation, the Reading Society of Corfu continues to strengthen its historical collections, preserving unique documents that contribute to safeguarding the island’s collective memory and cultural identity for future generations.
